“Adrian Wheale is the managing director and chairman of Wheale Thomas Hodgins, a headhunting firm that specialises in recruiting for small or medium sized enterprises (SME’s). He warns that blue-chip alumni should not approach SME’s thinking that their professional background makes them a shoo-in for a job. A big-company manager could be at a disadvantage when applying to a small firm, said Wheale, as entrepreneurs could well assume that he or she would not have the right commercial experience to be able to work with relatively limited financial and human resources. On top of that, they would be competing with a strong pool of experienced people who specialise in leading small businesses as they grow into larger ones.

“It’s a bit like a Premier League footballer thinking they can get into the Championship side - they’re not always up for the fight,” Wheale said.

Managers who want to make the change need to be able to show that they have strong commercial abilities that have a direct relevance to a smaller business.

“I’ve never recruited someone with transferable skills” Wheale said. “I’m always asked to find specific experience and so are my competitors. And, with supply exceeding demand, it is a buyers market.”

Those who make the move successfully, though, can reap significant rewards. For a start, there is the possibility of making more money if the business succeeds as salary packages are often linked to the company’s performance. The flip side of this, of course, is that you will make less if it does not. It is also possible to jump three or even four levels of promotion in the time it would take to get up in one rung of the career ladder in a big business.
